What
was the threat?A mineral extraction company wants to dig a whopping great big quarry smack bang in the middle of our lovely village.
What was at risk?
In simple terms, everything that we know and love about Pentney. The peace, the serenity, the scenery. Properties will suffer damage, their values will be reduced and the roads will be rendered unuseable and dangerous.
Who would it have affected?
Everyone in the village, and more. The proposal will also have an impact on the lives of people living as far away as Narborough and West Bilney.
What could I have done to help?
Support this site and add your thoughts, comments, rants and opinions to the message board, helping to create a single loud unified voice for the village. A voice that's loud enough to make itself heard by national press agencies. In addition to this, you can sign our E-Petition to the Prime Minister.
At
long last, Norfolk County Council has finally got round to publishing
the much delayed Mineral
Site Allocation List. This is the document that we've all been waiting
for. The one that will let us know if our objections during the initial
consultation process were in vain, or if those in the county council planning
department actually listened to us.Well, the good news is that Norfolk County Council have clearly taken our concerns seriously, because the MIN-93 Pentney quarry site has been dropped from the list of proposed sites.
The document can be found here, and the section relevant to our site can be found on page 9. Pentneys MIN93 site has been marked in red and annotated as UNACCEPTABLE.
Put simply, this means that Pentney has been Saved.
The document still has to go before the cabinet of elected representatives at Norfolk County Council on September 14th for their seal of approval, however the publication of this document is an extremely welcome and reassuring preview of that meeting.
I would like to take this opportunity, both for myself, and on behalf of the Save Pentney Action Group to thank everyone out there who helped and supported our campaign.
Some of you offered moral support, some offered financial support, hundreds of you displayed car stickers all over the country, and many people came forward to offer us the benefit of their skills, knowledge and expertise.
I'm extremely grateful to the press, both local and national, for all the publicity and support we've received during the long drawn out campaign.
I'd like to thank my ever patient and long suffering wife, Janet who has stood by me while I ranted away to anyone who would listen, and disappeared for long hours each day to do research, make phone calls, attend meetings and write letters.
And last but not least, the warmest and deepest thanks go out to our wonderful neighbour, mr Stephen Fry and his sister Jo. Without Stephen's endorsement, our campaign would never have made it to the national press and our fight would have been considerably harder.
The
Save Pentney Action Group, in association with the Save Pentney website
would like to extend our thanks to Norfolk County Council for allowing
us to present them with a dossier of our findings
during the past 10 months of campaigning, and for allowing us to make
a presentation to the planning committee at County Hall on December 1st.Click here to view the dossier.
At
first we were told by NCC that an announcement would be made regarding
the quarry site allocations in November 2008. Then as November started
to approach, they announced delays and gave us a new date of January 30th
2009. Now however, we hear that NCC have delayed the decision yet again,
but this time nobody knows for certain what the new date is.Click here for more information.

Since
we first learned that our village is at risk of being swallowed up by
a dirty great quarry, I have been sending dozens of letters a week to
organisations and individuals both directly and indirectly involved with
MIN93. However, a number of organisations and individuals are either ignoring
my letters, or else just refusing to respond to correspondence.Click here for more information.
I
must take this opportunity to extend my deepest and warmest thanks to
everyone who gave up their Saturday afternoon (July 12th) to come along
and support the Open Forum in the village hall. Although no formal head
count was conducted, we estimate around 200 people passed through the
hall at the weekend to offer their support and find out what we have
been doing on their behalf.Click here for more information.
Following
Savills recent announcement of an amended MIN93 site boundary map, I've
received what can only be described as a disturbing story of deception
from a source who wishes to remain anonymous, and will hereafter be
referred to as Miss X. I have learned that the new site map, which
can be viewed here, existed as long ago as March 17th 2008, possibly
even earlier.Click here for more information.
About
a month ago, I wrote a letter to Norfolk County Council asking about
their policy regarding compensation for home-owners who will suffer
a significant loss of property value if this quarry goes ahead. Today
I got a reply, and sadly, they've told us that they are not responsible
for any financial loss incurred as a result of their actions.Click here for more information.
Savills
have submitted yet another map to NCC showing a revised MIN93 site outline.
This time they have sliced the site in half, removing the part nearest
to the village. This means that any objections we have submitted are
now irellevant as they refer to a different MIN93 site to the one now
being considered. It appears we are not playing on a level pitch.Click here for more information.
Norfolk
County Council have finally published all of the comments that we, the
Pentney community left in response to the MIN93 site during the consultation
process. In total, they received over 800 individual statements of objection
to our site, and only one comment actively supporting the quarry.Click here for more information.
Until
recently, we've been working on the supposition that NCC would be announcing
the results of the recent consultation process some time in November.
However, due to an overwhelming number of objections, they have had
to delay Decision Day, or D-Day as I like to call it, by two whole months
to January 30th 2009.Click here for more information.
It
doesn't take a genius to realise that quarrying is a very intrusive
activity. One of the ways it intrudes into our lives is through noise.
Constant, unrelenting noise that you can't silence by simply closing
the windows, because the noise is being carried right into your home
through vibrations in the ground. This is the future that faces Pentney
if we don't act now.Click here for more information.
We're
hearing a lot of talk about the health risks associated with airborne
PM10 particles, pollution and fumes. People are frightened, while at
the same time the minerals companies poo-poo our concerns as unimportnat.
But for the time being, Pentneys residents are facing a more imminent
and sinister health risk. I'm talking about STRESS.Click here for more information.
In addition to this, we also have an archive of press articles about our campaign to save Pentney village. To see Pentney in the press, browse through the list of headlines below until you find the one you're looking for. These links will open in a new window.
